Hurricane season is upon us, which means many of us are preparing our homes for potential high winds and heavy rainfall. As you’re going through your checklist, be sure you don’t neglect one of the most important systems in your home – your A/C unit. Getting your A/C ready for hurricane season is easy with our five steps and will help ensure your A/C unit is ready to withstand any severe weather.

Step One: Power Down Your Unit

Severe weather and storms can cause power surges. Turn off your AC at the circuit breaker to prevent any surges and other problems they may cause (like a fire).

Step Two: Clean Up Your Yard

Don’t leave any potential projectiles lying around your yard. Pick up and secure any patio furniture, toys or branches to ensure they don’t become a problem when the bad weather hits.

Step Three: Don’t Neglect Your Outdoor Unit

If you have a central heating and cooling system, cover your outdoor condenser. Using plywood or tarp as protection can keep it safe from heavy rainfall and/or wind damage.

Step Four: Buy a Generator

Having a backup generator in case of a power outage during a storm can ensure you’ll still be cool and comfortable with the help of your AC if a storm passes and leaves you without power.

Step Five: Remove A/C Units from Windows

If you happen to have A/C window units, be sure you remove them and store them inside for the duration of the storm. High wind speeds can actually rip these units from your window and fling them through the air, potentially causing damage to property or worse, other people.

Once the storm has passed, always inspect your air conditioner for any signs of flooding or damage. If you need assistance in determining whether your unit is damaged, one of our skilled technicians at Air Solutions can help. Simply contact us today.
